Start with tank size
These decisions apply to a Jayco fresh water system. Find the fresh tank capacity before adding sanitizer; if the capacity is unknown, stop and find the tank label. The solution ratio is one gallon of sanitizing solution for every 15 gallons of tank capacity.
Sanitize a new or stored tank
| Decision | Use | Stop |
|---|---|---|
| 50 ppm, 4 hours | 1/4 cup household bleach per gallon of water; one gallon per 15 gallons of tank capacity; leave at least 4 hours. | Stop if tank capacity is unknown. |
| 100 ppm, 1 hour | 1/2 cup household bleach per gallon of water; one gallon per 15 gallons of tank capacity; leave at least 1 hour. | Stop if tank capacity is unknown. |
| Purge the lines | After filling, run the pump and open hot faucets, then cold faucets, until chlorine is noticeable. | Stop if no chlorine reaches the faucets. |
Maintain the tank between trips
| Task | When | Stop / condition |
|---|---|---|
| Sanitize | New RV; beginning and end of each season; every three months of use; after contamination. | Stop and diagnose if contamination returns. |
| Drain unused water | At the end of every trip. | Stop if the drain will not open. |
| Fill with a dedicated hose | Use a non-toxic drinking-water hose only for fresh water; keep it off the ground. | Stop if the hose is unknown or contaminated. |
| Protect pressure | Use a water pressure regulator when park pressure may be excessive. | Stop if pressure is not controlled. |
Where this stops
This is a tank sanitizing and maintenance decision, not a repair for a cracked tank, failed pump, or contaminated water source. Stop and use the model-specific Jayco manual or a qualified technician for those cases.
